About the project

"Gelina - the hidden Bulgarian mountain tradition" uncovers the Pomak wedding tradition in Ribnovo, a remote village in Bulgaria’s Rhodope Mountains. This short documentary film and accompanying photo exhibition capture the vibrant rituals, intricate costumes, and deep spiritual significance of this authentic cultural practice. Through the eyes of a traveling photographer, we reveal personal stories of the young couple and their community, preserving customs passed down through generations.

Filmed with professional crews ensuring high‑quality footage and authentic representation, Gelina promotes Bulgaria’s intangible heritage across Europe. It emphasises cultural diversity, community bonds, and the role of traditions in maintaining identity. Premiering at Horta Gallery in Brussels with multilingual subtitles, the project fosters dialogue and awareness of lesser‑known Balkan customs
